(March 6, 2017) – Active Interest Media (aimmedia.com) today announced the hiring of Matt Samet as editor of Climbing, one of the marquis brands in AIM’s Outdoor Group along with Backpacker and SKI. Samet has been contributing to the title since 1996 and served as its editor-in-chief from 2007 through 2010. He replaces Julie Ellison, who was longing for a return to travel and writing, and will continue to serve as the title’s editor-at-large, contributing to Climbing’s print, online, and educational efforts.

“Matt brings incredible knowledge of all aspects of the sport, as well as a legacy of hard climbs and top-notch writing and editing,” said Jonathan Dorn, head of the Outdoor Group and AIM’s digital and creative services divisions. “Teamed with Julie, our edit staff will have an unrivaled insight into what’s driving this sport’s participants – from the weekend warriors to the newest top athletes – to new heights.”

“As a longtime climber and writer/editor in the outdoor space, I’m excited to return to the brand that inspired my career and continues to inspire passionate climbers of all stripes,” says Samet. “Julie and team have done wonderful work with Climbing, both print and online, as well as with our new AIM Adventure U courses. I’m keen to build on their efforts.”

Samet joined AIM full-time in 2015 as the copy chief for Yoga Journal and Vegetarian Times, and was previously a freelancer for the company on various projects. He is the author of The Climbing Dictionary and The Crag Survival Handbook, both published by The Mountaineers Books, and lives with his family in Boulder, Colorado, where he has been active in the local climbing community for the past 25 years.
