Dear Jonathan:

Congratulations! You have been chosen by the Commuter of the Year committee, made up of GO Boulder and Walk & Bike Month staff to be honored as the city of Boulder’s 2008 Bike Commuter of the Year.

Each spring, commuters are recognized for their dedication to finding, using and promoting Boulder’s transportation options. Each winner is a positive role mode for choosing alternate modes of travel and consciously making an impact on our community by reducing pollution, traffic and congestion. Certainly you fit this description well.

The committee was impressed with so much of what you do including that you were inspired to ride your bike more by “The Inconvenient Truth,” and that went on to become a volunteer presenter of this documentary. You commute by bike to work 11 miles round trip each day, using three of Boulder’s bike paths. Not only do you work to inspire you staff of 30 to leave their cars at home by challenging them to reduce their carbon footprint, but you have also challenged the 340,000 readers of Backpacker Magazine to ride more. Also encouraging was to learn that since you started riding rather than driving only seven months ago you have lost 12 pounds, lowered your body fat by 2.5 percent and gone through two sets of tires and 15 tubes. When the temperature dipped to three below zero, still you rode.

We are glad Andrew thought to nominate you for this award, as you were certainly the most deserving.

In the coming months we will ask a few small favors of you, we would like to write a press release with your profile, take a photo of you in action, honor you at our Walk & Bike Month Kick-Off/Ice Cream Social which will be held mid-May, and ask you to speak at a function or two from time-to-time over the year to share your enthusiasm with others in the community. Your story is a great one and we would like to provide some opportunities for you to share it with others. As well it is likely that we will feature you in our 2008 Walk and Bike Month video that will air throughout the year on Municipal Channel 8.

Congratulations again and I will call you soon (perhaps after spring break).

Best Wishes,

Andrea Robbins
