Vegetarian Times Publishes 400th Issue
EL SEGUNDO , CA, JAN. 7, 2013 — Vegetarian Times’ January 2013 issue marks the 400th issue of the magazine. In the 38 years since the magazine was
first published, public perception of vegetarianism has evolved from a fringe movement to a mainstream way of life, now lauded for its health benefits for
people and the planet.
“The recipes are always front and center in Vegetarian Times, but for this anniversary issue, we worked extra hard to reflect the diverse culinary talents that make up the new vegetarian landscape,” says editor in chief Elizabeth Turner.
The 400th issue includes features like “Made with Love,” in which husband-and-wife team Dan and Annie Shannon take the iconic Betty Crocker Cookbook and veganize their way through every recipe. In “The Mod Squad,” the molecular modernist geniuses at The Cooking Lab in Seattle, WA, including a team of scientists, inventors, and accomplished cooks led by Nathan Myhrvold and Maxime Bilet, apply their cutting-edge cooking tricks to vegetarian recipes. And “New Food Resolutions” shows how small, simple steps —such as adding flax seeds and a daily dose of specific spices to your diet—can add up to significant health benefits.
In 2012, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group, 7.3 million Americans identified themselves as vegetarian, with another 22.8 million following a “vegetarian-inclined” diet. In 2000, according to a Zogby poll, there were 4.7 million Americans who were vegetarian. This jump reflects an increase of about 55 percent in just over a decade.
This growth is reflected in the growth of Vegetarian Times (www.vegetariantimes.com) across all platforms The magazine’s rate base, now at 315,000, has been increased three times in the past two years; in 2012, unique visits to vegetariantimes.com was up 64% from the prior year; online ad sales increased 53% during the same time period. Social media metrics also saw marked increases during the same time period: Facebook traffic increased 68 percent to 85,000 fans; Twitter traffic increased 242% percent to 23,000 followers; and Pinterest traffic increased 2,623 percent to 8,100 followers. The magazine is now available on all tablets including iPad, Nook, and Kindle Fire, and on Android devices through Google Play. “This is a milestone issue for Vegetarian Times,” says publisher Bill Harper. “Our circulation has never been higher and we are now available on every tablet and browser based digital magazine formats. Even in the current tough business climate, advertising across all platforms continues to grow.”
