Title: Marketing and Business Development Director

The Active Interest Media Outdoor Group (including BACKPACKER Magazine, Climbing, SNEWS, O.R. Daily and their event and special interest programs) is seeking a creative, results-oriented Marketing and Business Development Director to lead strategic marketing and business development for our portfolio of outdoor media brands. This director will be an industry expert and responsible for maximizing customer lifetime value of the AIM Outdoor Group segment.  Reporting to the Group Publisher, the Marketing and Business Development Director will not only create and manage the consumer and B2B marketing strategy alongside brand content managers and publishers, but will also be an integral part of the brand positioning for the major brands within the group. Occasional travel will be required, including travel to event locations, sales calls, and industry meetings. This is a full-time role based in the AIM offices in Boulder, Colorado.

Outdoor Group Marketing Strategy Lead:

  • Work directly with Outdoor Group Sales Team in acquiring both national and industry category business
  • Work closely with brand managers to help define and position the Outdoor Group brands in the marketplace
  • Drive strategy and execution of marketing programs across print, video, digital, social, email, and events
  • Manage development of marketing materials and offer creative solutions through integrated programs that align with client direction and goals
  • Establish process and organized sales toolkit
  • Work with shared marketing staff to develop cross-platform marketing opportunities, proposals, digital and video campaigns and recaps for clients and agencies
  • Organize audience research and requests
  • Analyze and report marketing campaign metrics and client recaps
  • Maintain a project manager role when it comes to executing large multi-media marketing programs
  • Stay attuned to new market trends, events and new media opportunities
  • Build and maintain strategic partner relationships, attend industry events and client meetings with the sales team, and ability to present or contribute to presentations in meetings

 Event, PR, Digital and Creative Support:

  • Support signature BACKPAKER Magazine events and PR efforts when applicable
  • Conceptualize and direct design and digital teams in creation of promotional elements for events, sweepstakes and digital campaigns
  • Work with editorial and design team in creating unique brand opportunities and content for special sections, advertorials, promotional pages, sponsored content, events and more for advertisers and partners
  • Create and implement digital programs, contests and leveraged content
  • Work with shared marketing staff to execute events, including planning, organization, execution and recaps
  • Manage department invoices, marketing and event budgets, and monthly expenses

 Required Tasks and Skills:

  • Coordinate marketing efforts with Mountain Group and Corporate Sales marketing directors
  • Maintain a level of excellence that delivers media plans and ideas in the most professional way possible
  • Ability to develop high level strategy/creative around RFPs & media plans
  • Copy writing & editing proposals, advertorials and general sales tools
  • Serve as first point of contact on RFPs relating to Outdoor Group and ability to manage and direct appropriate marketing staff on RFPs
  • Take a proactive approach to sales & marketing and consistent idea generation
  • Track and maintain regular customer service on accounts to make sure we’re delivering and optimizing campaigns
  • Have an understanding of revenue goals and forecasting
  • Run an efficient and organized weekly meeting with marketing staff.
  • Assist and occasionally run weekly sales team meetings.
  • Play an integral role in management of shared marketing team & oversee process to ensure team is working efficiently and effectively
  • Understanding of research, story building, and media metrics
  • Manage regular sales materials, trade show prep alongside brand managers & publishers
  • High-level understanding of what we can do improve relevancy for AIM brands & the various brands we work with as well as working alongside brand managers and publishers to market individual AIM brands

Additional Responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for generating and overseeing the creation of: media plans, sales decks, custom programs, sell sheets, media kits, general presentations, product guides, site profile sheets, case studies, monthly edit line-ups and research materials
  • Responsive to sales rep needs around marketing materials & RFPs
  • Understanding of revenue forecasting alongside brand managers and publishers with a proactive approach to closing revenue gaps and consistently driving new revenue streams
  • Opportunity to be an integral part of new website & product launches
  • Post marketing management of client campaigns in partnership with sales reps
  • Ability to develop solutions in real time to help optimize and ensure successful campaign results for clients
  • Working within established budget guidelines and managing costs for all projects
  • Management of existing vendor relationships and opportunity to help develop new partnerships
  • Maintain a big-picture outlook to help create and sell multi-advertiser and multi-platform programs


Essential skills & qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of experience in direct marketing, consumer marketing or product/brand management
  • Excellent communicator both written and verbal
  • Team player with positive attitude
  • Process-oriented with strong analytic interest
  • Ability to take direction and apply own creative skills and talent toward successful execution of assigned work
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Experience with digital marketing and custom content
  • Strong interest in outdoors, snow sports and leading an active, healthy lifestyle
  • Creative and eager to brainstorm ideas
  • A self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Detail oriented, organized, and has an ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment with flawless attention to detail
  • Advanced MS office skills, specifically in PowerPoint & Excel
  • Salesforce experience a plus.
