Primary Objective of Position

BACKPACKER magazine, the premier brand in wilderness travel and service, is hiring an assistant editor to oversee our skills department. This role will be responsible for executing a cross-platform content plan, including print, digital, video, and online education. A successful applicant will be competent outdoorsperson with a strong wilderness ethic and have a demonstrated aptitude in writing and editing, digital savvy, and a passion for helping readers get into the outdoors safely and comfortably. This full-time position is based in our offices in Boulder, Colorado, and benefits include medical, dental, vision, 401(k). Professional Responsibilities

The Assistant Editor will assign and edit the Skill Set department for the magazine, develop writers and contributors for same, and develop skills-related content for distribution on digital channels and contribute to online education initiatives. In addition, the Assistant Editor will be expected to spend time in the field cultivating and perfecting new skills and keeping up with new trends in techniques and equipment in our sport.

  • Must be a self-starter who is able take initiative on projects and to plan and organize their time.
  • Proven ability and skill in writing and editing.
  • Proven ability to work with others in a cooperative team effort.
  • Proven computer skills in MS Office and Adobe InDesign.
  • Proven ability to efficiently manage and organize own time.
  • Planning experience in a publishing environment desirable.

Job Conditions

Working Conditions: The Assistant Editor must be comfortable working on a computer for a standard 8-hour workday, with night- and weekend work periodically required. The applicant must also be able to carry a loaded camping backpack (30-35 pounds) for 10-15 miles in a day, and be comfortable wilderness camping.
